About Destination on Location

Have you ever left a movie theater and been as captivated by the film's location as by the story? Has a movie or TV show ever left you thinking, “Wow, where was that filmed? I would just love to go there, someday!”?

If so, Destination On Location, a luxury film/travel website whose mission is to bring movie destinations and fans together, aims to fulfill that fantasy, presenting a new form of travel experience that’s become known the world over as “set-jetting.”

Set-jetting?

Absolutely—check it out:

set-jet

v. phr. to visit as a tourist a place used as a filming location in a movie or television show; to participate in movie tourism or film tourism.

Set-jetting is a travel trend that is fast moving from niche to mainstream as travelers become more sophisticated about visiting the places they’ve seen in films and on TV. It’s Lord of the Rings fans heading for New Zealand where the film was made, and tourists converging on the sunny shores of the Ionian Greek Island of Kefalonia, the setting for Louis de Berniere’s Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. Forbes Traveler takes special note of the set jet experience, pointing out that as many as 65,000 visitors descend annually on the tiny, picturesque town of Dyersville, Iowa--many from as far away as Japan and Australia. Why Dyersville? That’s easy: It was immortalized in the immensely popular film, Field of Dreams.

But few destinations have inspired as many films as has New York City…and few films have inspired followings as devoted as the fans of Sex and the City, the hit series that chronicled the lives and loves of four single women in Manhattan, turning the "Cosmopolitan" into every young woman’s drink de jour, and Jimmy Choos, the shoes of her dreams.

Making its debut in 1998, lowering its curtain in 2004 after six wildly successful and critically acclaimed seasons—and drawing new viewers every year since with its TBS reruns—Sex and the City was—and continues to be—a global phenomenon unlike any other, changing the way women all over live their lives, from dating, relationships and being single, to celebrating the special bonds of friendship that the characters shared.

Specifically timed to coincide with the opening of the long-awaited Sex and the City: The Movie, in May 2008, guests had the chance to walk in the footsteps—literally—of their four favorite and fabulous characters, Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha. That's why Destination on Location has designed its Luxury Weekend Getaway--an exclusive tour featuring the hotspots, clubs, shops, locations and more, as seen on Sex and the City. Following DOL’s carefully choreographed itinerary, guests experienced the vicarious thrills provided by the unique presence of the series’ “fifth character”—that of New York City itself.
